Pick sets

A pick set is a collection of specialized tools designed for removing and installing various types of seals, such as O-rings, gaskets, and oil seals.

This type of pick set contains sturdy and durable picks and hooks that are specifically shaped to grip seals so that they can be safely removed without damaging surrounding components.

A pick set consists of several picks (usually 4 to 6 pieces) with different shapes and tips, such as straight, angled, curved, and 90-degree hooks.

Pick sets

A typical seal pick set includes:
  • Angled hooks : For loosening seals that are deep inside housings
  • Curved hooks: For gripping seals in tight spaces and pulling them out
  • Double hook or U-hook: For extra grip on wider seals or the safe removal of larger, hard-to-reach O-rings.
  • Straight picks: For carefully prying or lifting the seal without damaging it.

These tools are often more robust than regular picks because they need to be able to exert force without bending or breaking.

What is a pick set used for?

  • Mechanical maintenance: To remove seals in engines, hydraulic systems, pumps, and other mechanical components.
  • Installation of new seals: The set can also help to accurately place new O-rings or gaskets.
  • Car and machine maintenance: Widely used by mechanics working on cars, trucks, and industrial machines where seals often need to be replaced.

Difference between Pick sets and Seal hooks, summarized:

  • Pick set: Consists of several thin, different shapes for precision work on O-rings, small parts, and locks.
  • Seal hook: A single, sturdy hook specifically designed for removing seals and gaskets that require more force.

The choice between a pick set and a seal hook therefore depends mainly on the type of work:
Precision work (pick set) versus sealing work (seal hook).
